We would recommend that you use RAID 5, although Synology doesn't offer its own RAID Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) we would only recommend this is you are using different capacity drives. If you are concerned with the possibility of having more than one drive fail at any one time then we recommend using RAID 6 instead, although RAID 6 is slower it is somewhat a safer RAID.

What Systems do we recommend?

At Synology Hosting we have a couple of different recommendations and these will depend on what stage you are at in your photography career or hobby.

The first system that we recommend is the DS214+ this system better suited towards hobbyists, but however it could be use by professionals alike.

What does the DS214+ have to offer?

CPU: Duel Core 1.33 GHz

System Memory: 1 GB DDR3

Drive Bays: 2

Maximum internal capacity: 16 TB

Note: This system does not support an external expansion unit therefore it wouldn't be an advisable choice if you are looking for massive amounts of storage with the ability to scale when needed.

Another choice would be the DS713+ this DiskStation would again be better suited towards hobbyists but is still a viable option if you are looking for a storage solution for your photography business.

What does the DS713+ have to offer?

CPU: Intel Atom Duel Core 2.13 GHz

System Memory: 1 GB DDR3

Drive Bays: 2

Maximum internal capacity: 16 TB

Maximum external capacity: 42 TB

Both of these systems are available via our Private NAS package and we would recommend these systems to anyone who wants to have additional private storage of their photo's that they can share with their family and friends. Although these systems will be fine for professional photographers we would however recommend one of our better packages as this will give better performance overall.

If you would like one of these solutions to store your photographs please visit our Private NAS solution package page.

The next system that we recommend is the DS415+ this DiskStation is perfect for photographers that have just started their photography career and are looking for a storage solution with the power and scalability to support them for many years.

What does the DS415+ bring to the table?

CPU: Intel Atom Quad Core 2.4 GHz

System Memory: 2 GB DDR3

Drive Bays: 4

Maximum internal capacity: 32 TB

Maximum External capacity: 108TB

This solution is available on our Standard NAS package, and we would recommend this system to be used by and professional photographer although we feel this system is better suited towards people just starting out in their photography career, this solution is perfect for veterans alike with up to 32GB of internal storage, if you manage to fill this up you are able to use an external expander system turning your 32GB system into a massive 140TBs!

The last system that we recommend for photographers is the DS1815+ this system is perfect for any professional photographer and we recommend this system to any serious photographers that are looking for the perfect balance between performance, storage and scalability.

What does the DS1815+ have to offer you?

CPU: Intel Atom Quad Core 2.4 GHz

System Memory: 2 GB DDR3 ( Expandable up to 6 GB)

Drive Bays: 8

Maximum internal capacity: 64 TB

Maximum External capacity: 108TB

With this solution you are able to have up to a massive 64 TB of internal storage and if you find that it isn't enough for your requirements, you are able to add an external expansion unit scaling 64 TB to 172TB! We feel this system is perfect for all photographers be it professionals with many years of experience or people just starting out. This system is available on our business package if you find that the 64 TB of storage isn't enough for your requirements please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to discuss adding an external expansion unit to the system for you.

Surveillance Station 7.1 http://nas-hosting.net/blog/2015/08/17/synology-surveillance-station-71-beta http://nas-hosting.net/blog/2015/08/17/synology-surveillance-station-71-beta#comm Synology has announced the beta avialbility of it's Surveillance Station 7.1. The latest version of it's video managment system deliveres optimised preformance and much more..

RTSP for smoother surveillance experience: Support for RTSP increases video streaming performance, providing an even smoother experience when watching feeds in Surveillance Station or DS cam (for iOS devices). Plus, developers can take advantage of support for RTSP to integrate video streams into third-party systems.

ŸMulticast boosts bandwidth efficiency in multiple user scenarios: Multicast support reduces the workload and bandwidth consumption when running Surveillance Station in environments where multiple clients are viewing video feeds. This means several security personnel can monitor a live view from different workstations at the same time without impacting system performance.

ŸAdvanced live view alert and notifications provide refined management: For large-scale surveillance deployments with hundreds of cameras, monitoring cameras one-by-one can be inefficient. Thanks to under the hood modifications, Live View Analytics alerts are displayed for cameras that are not included in the Live View layout. Also events can also be directly highlighted on an E-map, so users can quickly see the camera and location of suspicious events straightaway.

Robust CMS performance and stability: By refining the database structure and adding a dedicated multipart link between host and recording servers, Surveillance Station 7.1 increases the speed at which recordings and event information are transferred from recording servers. In addition, revamped license management improves the stability in CMS deployments.

ŸGreater support for ONVIF brings more flexibility: In addition to providing native integration for edge recording on select camera models, Surveillance Station now supports edge recording on many more camera models thanks to ONVIF Profile G. Furthermore, improvements in ONVIF Profile S make it easier to find and add compliant cameras to Surveillance Station with the "ONVIF Search" option. These new features give users more flexibility and easier installation when setting up a video surveillance system.

Private NAS vs The Cloud! http://nas-hosting.net/blog/2015/07/08/private-nas-vs-the-cloud http://nas-hosting.net/blog/2015/07/08/private-nas-vs-the-cloud#comm There are many benefits of using Cloud storage as many may know. It is an efficient and convenient way of being able to access all of your files from any computer or mobile device whenever you may need them.

But what if you want your own private cloud storage that only You have access too? The answer to that question is Network Attached Storage (NAS).

What Exactly can NAS offer you over the most commonly used Cloud storage solutions out there e.g., DropBox, GoogleDrive and OneDrive ect...

Price comparison Synology NAS vs The Cloud!

Lets consider that Google offers 15GB free, clearly a NAS will never pay off if the 15GB storage servers your needs, but as your needs increase the pay off period will start to fall. When you start to overflow into 400GB+ a NAS becomes extremely feasible.

for the purpose of this blog we will be doing a comparison of Googles 10GB package and our 12GB Standard NAS (12GB due to not having 10GB option)

What do you get for $99/ month?

What does Google Drive have to offer?

How much storage is on offer for $99/ month with Google Drive?

Google Drive offers 10TB of Storage for $99/ month, This is $9.99/ month per 1TB of storage

What is the file size upload limit?

Google drive allows users to upload files up to 5GB in size, but they must not be converted to Google Docs, Slides and Sheets. There is a 50MB size limit on presentations and documents, and a 100MB limit on spreadsheets converted to Sheets.

What do you actually get for $99/ mo with Google?

With Google you are able to access email's, upload photos and videos, and store any documents that you require backing up or want to be able to access on the go.

What does SynologyHosting have to offer?

How much storage is on offer for $99/ month with SynologyHosting?

We at SynologyHosting offer 12TB of storage for $99 /month, This works out to be $8.25/ month per 1TB of storage.

What is the file size upload limit for Synology?

Synology allows the users to upload files up to 16TB in size, without any limitation to what the file type is, why limit yourself? People not only have more files than they did before, but files are also much bigger.
What do you actually get for $99/ mo with SynologyHosting?

Synology allows the users to upload Photo's and videos, storage and important documents and access them whenever required via mobile device or another computer system using a QuickConnect ID, not only are you able to use Synology as an alternative to Google Drive, but if you require it you are able to also sync your Synology NAS with Google Drive for some added security.
With Synology your NAS is not only used for Storage, you are also able to use it for Surveillance, Web Hosting, PBX (Phone System), Email Server and much much more.

Conclusion

Overall a Synology NAS looks very appealing, it does what the most commonly used Cloud services can do, and much more, best of all it is private, meaning that you and only you have access to that device, no shared storage between multiple companies or people.

If you find yourself never using Googles 15GB of free storage, then a Synology NAS is most likely not for you, although it does offer some additional features that are worth considering even if you find yourself not wanting to use it for Storage.

If you find yourself looking into Googles upgrade packages it might be worth looking into alternate methods of online storage, such as your own private NAS hosted in a secure Datacentre.

Backing up Linux computer to Synology http://nas-hosting.net/blog/2015/07/08/backing-up-linux-computer-to-synology http://nas-hosting.net/blog/2015/07/08/backing-up-linux-computer-to-synology#comm Quick Overview

Your Synology NAS can be a backup destination for your Linux computer by using any of the following protocols: rsync or FTP, CIFS, NFS or WebDAV, among which the most common is rsync. Automated backup can be performed with a written script; data transfer of the backup can be encrypted to protect your important data with a higher level of security.

This post will guide you step by step on how to back up data on your Linux system to your Synology NAS.

Configure your Synology NAS as the destination server

If you are looking to back up data from your Linux computer to Synology NAS, you need to enable Network Backup Service on the destination server first. To enable this function, please do the following:

Log in to DSM using an account belonging to the administrators group, or assign the application privilege for network backup destination to a user account (at Control Panel > Privileges) and log in with its credentials.

Open Backup & Replication.

Go to Backup Services > Network Backup Destination, and then tick Enable network backup service.

Click Apply.

To set up a DSM user with privileges on your Synology NAS:

Go to Control Panel > Privileges, and allow the Network Backup Destination privilege to the user.

Then go to Control Panel > Shared Folder, select a shared folder, click Edit > Permissions, and then allow privileges to the user.

Back up data from Linux server to Synology NAS

The most frequantly used way to back up data from Linux server to Synology NAS is to use rsync to make mirrored folders. You may need to mount the folder on the Synology NAS to your Linux server using CIFS or NFS mount beforehand. The command will be:

[root@www ~]# rsync -av [source_folder] [destination_folder]
# 1. Make /home/ mirror to /backupdata/home/
[root@www ~]# rsync -av /home /backupdata/

Or, you can simply execute the following command on your Linux computer without having to mount the folder. Note that ##.##.##.## in the example below should be replaced by the IP address of your Synology NAS and NetBackup with the destination shared folder on your NAS, if you want to back up data to shares other than the default folder:

rsync -av home/ admin@##.##.##.##::SynologyHosting/backupdata/

This data backup can also be encrypted by inserting -e ssh into the command:

rsync -av -e ssh home/ admin@##.##.##.##::SynologyHosting/backupdata/

When rsync is running, it will compare the data between your Synology NAS and Linux server, and only modified files will be transferred to save you time. You are also able to make daily backups using a Linux Backup Script.

What is Synology Hybrid Raid? http://nas-hosting.net/blog/2015/07/02/what-is-synology-hybrid-raid http://nas-hosting.net/blog/2015/07/02/what-is-synology-hybrid-raid#comm Synology Hybrid Raid (SHR) is an automated RAID management system that make storage volume deployment easier than traditional RAID systems, SHR allows for 1-disk or 2-disk redundancy, this means can suffer up to two disks lost, and the volume will still be available for use.

Do I require SHR?

Depending on your Experience with RAID it is not necessary to use SHR. Therefore is completely optional to use, If you have little to no technical background experience we recommend using SHR as it is very simple and easy to setup.

For experienced uses classic RAID_levels are available if preferred, the following RAID levels may be available on your Synology NAS:

  1. Basic
  2. JBOD
  3. RAID 0
  4. RAID 1
  5. RAID 5
  6. RAID 6
  7. RAID 10

How can I setup SHR?

Setting up SHR couldn't be easier, but we have created a short and simple tutorial showing how to setup SHR on your system.

Go to Main Menu > Storage Manager
When you first go into Storage Manager you should see something that looks like the image below, in our example we have chosen to use 2 x 500GB drives.

Synology Storage Manager overview 2 Drives

To create a RAID you need to go to Volume > Create, When you have chosen Create you will then have the Volume Creation wizard open. This will give you the options to create a "Quick" or "Custom" Volume RAID, as this is a guide on creating a SHR volume we will be selecting "Quick" as seen in the image.

Synology Volume Creation Wizard, "Quick" (SHR) selected.

After selecting Next you will be asked to choose the disks that you would like to create the volume on, select your required disks and choose Next. After selecting Next you will get a warning message notifying you that If you continue it will erase all current data in the selected disks. If you are sure that there is no important information stored on these disks then continue by selecting OK.

Synology Volume Creation Wizard Warning.

After choosing Continue you will now be asked if you would like to perform a disk check, we at Synology Hosting recommend performing a disk check, but again this is optional, after selecting your option click Next.

You will now be on the confirmation screen, this will show all your configuration that you selected in the prior steps. Double check your setting and make sure you are happy with what you have selected, If you are happy then proceed by selecting Accept.

Synology Confirm volume settings

When you have accepted it will then save your configuration and will be take you to the Volume creation page, this process might take a little while, on this screen it will show the current creation process.

Synology volume creating

After it has finished creating the RAID volume, depending on if you selected DISK verification it will continue to check the disks in the background, this can take a while but it is all automatically done, it may impact the overall performance of you Synology NAS during this time.

Done creating synology RAID (SHR)

Now we have finished setting up your SHR.

If you have had any issues setting up your SHR or have any questions regarding SHR please feel free to leave a comment and I will get back to you ASAP!
